Laurie Kimbrel, EdD, has been the founding head of school for the Brookhaven Innovation Academy (BIA) since April 2016. Under the direction of Laurie Kimbrel, this Norcross, Georgia-based charter school stresses a combination of instructional methods, including project-based learning (PBL).
PBL is a method of instruction whereby students learn theory and skills through extensive study and hands-on work to solve a genuine, complex question or problem. This method makes learning more engaging for students by providing hands-on experience in addition to classroom exercises.
Due to the popularity of PBL, variations in the implementation of this method have arisen in the educational community, and there has even been an attempt at standardization in the form of the Gold Standard PBL. Years of development through thousands of teachers encompassing all grades and subjects has established PBL as an efficient and fun way to learn while helping students develop the expertise required for their academic, career, and personal lives.
